SAIL CANADA, Eh? How about Alaska???
PAPA II will be sailing back up the Pacific Coast next spring and be making her way through British Columbia and into Southeastern Alaska next summer. Days are long and the scenery is amazing. Sail with the Whales, fish for the Crabs and Salmon or just pick up a few dozen Oysters on the beach...

Much of the 2008 summer, PAPA will be searching for the "Great Dungeness Crab" in the Canadian waters north of Seattle. If you have never sailed the Sunshine Coast of Canada, you are in for a real treat.  Many Puget Sound boaters never get past the San Juan Islands.  The area North of the border is truly spectacular.   Oysters as far as the eye can see.  Salmon bigger than the BBQ - and the only creatures you have to share them with are the Bald Eagles.  There are so many private anchorages in the Canadian Marine Parks, that I have 3 guide books to cover them all.  Check out this month's issue of "Cruising World" for the feature article on Desolation Sound!!!

The 2008 schedule has not yet been released !!!!!

Below is the schedule for last summer as an example. Likely stops are Vancouver, Ketchikan and Juneau. The schedule is broken up into several legs. Prices are based on $265 / day /pp. Everything is included except fresh food. PAPA will be stocked with all the necessary dry goods. The Captain is buying the gas and the oysters are free... You can book your spot today for the trip of your choice. As always, custom trips are available as space and time permit. CAUTION  - a two week sailing adventure may change your life.

Here is a segment from the ships log for the 2006 trip to Canada.............

STAR DATE 9/20/2006...
Vancouver, British Columbia.

Docked safely at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club.  Right up front at Stanley Park.  Thanks to my friend Tony Chor, a member of the Seattle Yacht Club.  We just finished a well deserved dinner at the club house.  It was a "Fantastic" trip North to DESOLATION SOUND.  The Oysters were plentiful and the sailing perfect.  The following are excerpts from the ships log...

9/11 plus five...
12 NM to Kingston
1930 - Sunset over the Olympics.  PAPA and #1 son headed North on the Ebb Tide. In the Groove, 6+ knots up wind in 10 - 12 knots true of a warm Northerly breeze.  Sailing all the way, No motoring.  Pirate Flag a flying.   Not bad for a flat bottom winged keel overgrown laser.  This is the final trip for the "Old PAPA" .  The new boat is but a dream away. God I love this job.
2145 - "Secure from Special Sea and Anchor Detail", " Now set the anchor watch", " The Smoking lamp is lit", " Stand Down from General Quarters", "Set Condition Yankee",  "Liberty Call for Section Bravo."... or what ever they used to say in the Navy.

9/12
58 NM to Alack Bay
Well no terrorists were found in Appletree Cove last night.  Radar getting the workout today.  Less than 1/8 mile visibility.  Pirate flag has been replaced by the radar reflector.  PAPA is bouncing pretty good in the 3 foot chop.  Spend too much time below and your stomach will begin to remind you "we are at sea."

9/13
29 NM to Bellingham
Riding the Rosario Rocket north to Bellingham to pick up Mike and Tony.  Crabs are fighting in their bucket. YOGA underway today.

9/14
84 NM to Nanaimo
Up the inside of the Gulf islands to Nanaimo.  . Quality Hammock time.  "Nice docking everybody". Mike brings PAPA in and turns her on a dime.  Dinner ashore at "NY Style Pizza" (not really NY style stuff...)
Do not order the half salad, unless you are HUNGARY.

9/15
64 NM to Blubber Bay
Saw grey whale, dall's porpoises.  Like UP CLOSE!!!  Almost got wet when he flapped his big tail.  Man are those porpoises FAST.  Stern anchor to keep bow pointed outside the bay. Nice quiet place on the north end of Texada Island.

9/16
30 NM to Melanie Cove
Spinnaker sail all the way up the Malisipina Strait and the Thulin Passage.  Glorious sailing inside of the Copeland Islands.  Tight entrance to Prideaux Haven, the perfect Desolation Sound anchorage..  2 mile hike to another bay.  Glassy water. Warm with several jelly fish.

9/17
20 NM to Lagoon Cove
Welcome to Pendrell Sound.  Home of the OYSTER.  This is the place where they dump the old shells.  Had the place all to ourselves.  No other boats within miles.  Walked on the beach for hours and collected so many oysters we almost sunk the dingy.

9/18
31 NM to Cortes Bay
Side trip to Cassil Falls.  The famous fresh water waterfall that you can sail right up to.  Went for a snorkel and swim.  Had to get the stainless dodger pole I dropped.  And a few more oysters too.  Cleaned the bottom and saw the scratches the bareboaters left.  Never again... Cortes Bay had a Seattle Yacht Club outstation.  Nice place hot showers and a real dock.  We even found the fender we dropped yesterday floating in the middle of sound.  If you can't be good, be lucky...

9/19
58 Nm to Smuggler's Cove
Yet another spinnaker run down the inside Texada Island. Even found the school of porpoises we saw the other day. What day is it???  We ran with them for a while but even PAPA cannot keep up.  1700 wind dying as the captain slept in the bow hammock under the chute.  Motored the rest of the way to one of the tightest of entrances to a cove around.  "It is not that hard to get into (Smuggler's Cove), but if you F*** up, it's bad!" - Tony Chor - on the approach to tonight's anchorage. see www.tonychor.com

9/20
54 NM to Vancouver
Final day of the trip brings the most wind.  20 knots right down the pipe.  Good chance to practice the man overboard drills and Heaving too.  1st Reef and half a jib. Tacking inside Trial Islands to stay out of the worst of the 3-5 footers.  Coffee all over the cushions.  YOGA below decks was a challenge.  Motored under the Lion's Gate in a mist that only a Canadian can jog in.  Now tied up at the RVYC.

....  Truly a FANTASTIC trip.  Great food, fun and sailing.  The perfect crew.  Tony and Mike earned their wings and flew the Bavarian Flag with pride.  Weather was better than ever.  We may just have to do it again next year.  (on the new PAPA, stay tuned for the big announcement soon.)  Northerlies are forecast for tomorrow. With sunshine it should be great trip back to Seattle.
